Right-leaning responses to the partial release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release
But, a segment of conservative pundits and former President allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
But some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative influencers were given hard-copy folders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
